Kelowna EMDR
This tenant improvement project focused on creating an office for a psychology practice that required applied acoustic design necessary for security and confidentiality. Practicing EMDR Therapy, a one-on-one highly interactive technique, is effective in the treatment of psychologically stressful events and experiences – in other words, trauma. The importance of space well designed for acoustic attenuation, security, privacy and comfort were all primary initiatives for the design of the space. The initial construction budget was based on a standard office and the budget required adjustment to accommodate this office’s specialized program. In this practice, various contract psychologists use the space and while their requirements for acoustics and security were different, all treatment rooms needed to look similar imparting security in the regularity of the space. Reconciling this challenge required that the design process include an extensive series of site visits together with client to vendors of various product lines being considered for this project. Rooms built with various acoustic panelled walls were tested and reviewed to experience and understand differing acoustic attenuations to manage expectation. Research on product application included a visit to a lighting lab to experience and review various lighting scenarios. Reviewed and selected various materials and surfaces to apply for visual and tactile environments appropriate to the practiced psychology methodologies
